Helen Frankenthaler- Regina Llorente

Mountains and Sea (1952)

Daughter of a State Supreme Court Justice, Helen Frankenthaler studied fine art under some major names (Tamayo, for one). It was her acquaintance with the New York School (especially Jackson Pollock), that led her to explore the possibilities of pouring thinned paint on unprimed material - a unique, "staining" technique for which she is best known. Ms. Frankenthaler has also worked in sculpture and woodcut and color printmaking, and was the wife of the late painter and editor Robert Motherwell.
Frankenhaler, follower of Pollock and de Kooning, develops its own painting technique for applying paint to canvas is to liquefy the oil paint with turpentine and let the fabric absorb untreated eliminating any sense of three-dimensional. This technique inspires the movement of precursor fields color minimalism.
