Leonora Carrington -Self Portrait (Daniela Grijalva)

There are many things to analyze about this painting that show how Leonora feels about her life. I would like to start by talking about the two horses on the picture. When you read her biography you learn that she was a rebel when she was young and that she didn’t like her life back in England because she felt like it was full of rules made but society, a bunch o social pressure and specially fake people. I think she felt like everyone back home were like marionettes. She later escaped to a life that she considered to be better, where she could be a free person and most important where she could be her real self. I relate this to both of the horses; the one inside the room to her life back in England and the one outside to her idea of freedom. I can also see that the colors she used to paint what’s outside are brighter than the colors she used for the room she´s in.

Another thing that called my attention is her clothing. She seems to be dressed with men´s clothes in an era where all of the girls were supposed to dress with long dresses and always look impeccable. I think the way she decides to paint herself with messy hair, a stiff posture and men´s clothes is a way to express her rebelliousness.
